Enabling flashplayer and java plugin on Ubuntu (12.4)

biggest problem with ubuntu where you have a firewall and proxy to access all package resources will be to keep you firefox sane and running with required plugins, one of the required plugins will be flashplayer and java. So I had a bit of a struggle to get this working. but here are the procedures which will be guide for anyone in requirement of the same.

  • flashplayer plugin
    1. first check if you have plugin installed, buy checking in this link, flashplayer verification
    2. if you find the plugin missing then continue below
    3. download flashplayer plugin from adobe
      1. if you have apt option working then well and good if not
      2. choose below option
        1. adobe_flashplayer_download
      3. click on download and you would get “install_flash_player_11_linux.x86_64.tar.gz”
    4. untar this tar.gz file, and below will be the contents
      1. LGPL, libflashplayer.so, readme.txt, usr
    5. be smart and read readme.txt this has installation procedure, lazy ones read furthur….
    6. copy “libflashplayer.so” to
      • /usr/lib/flashplugin-installer/libflashplayer.so,
      • /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libflashplayer.so,
      • /home/<username>/.mozilla/plugins/libflashplayer.so
    7. “/home/<username>/.mozilla/plugins/libflashplayer.so” this being the temporary first place where firefox would fetch plugins from. usually this would be the only place where you need to update the flashplayer plugin but if that doesnot work update in all other places as well.
    8. copy /usr directory contents from the download to to your filesystem
      • sudo cp -rv usr/* /usr
    9. verify your plugin status by restarting your firefox and typing “about:plugin” in the address bar where you type your url.
    10. flashplayer_firefox
  • java plugin
    1. Whole procedure is provided in firefox support column lazies continue
    2. first verify you have java java_verification
    3. download java using the steps provided in ubuntu community documentation
    4. next would be configuring java which is provided in configuring_java website lazies continue
    5. find “libnpjp2.so” in you java installation mine was at
      • /usr/java/jre1.8.0_40/lib/amd64/libnpjp2.so
    6. create a symbolic link to this inside your plugin directory
      • cd ~/.mozilla/plugins
      • ln -s /usr/java/jre1.8.0_40/lib/amd64/libnpjp2.so
    7. restart your firefox browser
    8. verify your plugin status by restarting your firefox and typing “about:plugin” in the address bar where you typr url.
    9. firefox_java_plugin

All this done, you should have the flash content and java content working when you access websites with that content.
